Repair Corsa EPS fault (hard to turn right / left)
Yesterday I successfully reset the torque sensors on my 2001 (51) 1.2 sXi Corsa C and thought it might be of interest to everyone here since the EPS steering fault is very common and is VERY expensive to fix (£900 + labour) because Vauxhall insist on replacing the whole steering column.
The steering on my Corsa was easy to turn left but very difficult to turn right because the torque sensor had drifted out of calibration, either through wear or through dodgy design – I’m not sure which.
The following procedure requires no special tools and took me only about 30 minutes from start to finish, even though I was a complete noob and had to figure it out myself. Contrary to information I have been told in the past (the reason I didn’t try to fix this before) the whole dashboard does not need to be removed. The process is very simple and you should be able to do this in a similar time.
Sure, it could be made much more complicated if done properly by putting the car on axle stands, using a DVM and wiring adapter etc, but this trial and error method worked fine for me.
1) Remove the driver’s side storage compartment to the bottom right of the steering column by disengaging the clips in the top of the compartment and pulling it forward (towards you). Easily done using a flat screwdriver.
2) Remove the 2 screws keeping the bottom plastic cover in place. They are positioned under the cover and can be seen by looking up from the floor.
You should now see the steering column and the EPS unit clearly.
3) Gain access to torque sensor.
The torque sensor is positioned behind a metal plate that is secured by two screws. The plate can be removed by unscrewing the screws, but since I couldn’t get a screwdriver in there I just bent the plate forward to gain access to the torque sensor.
4) Mark the current position of the torque sensor using a marker pen, white tippex or paint.
The torque sensor is fixed in position by two screws. When the screws are loosened, the torque sensor is free to rotate, which adjusts the voltage offset into the EPS unit. Vauxhall have filled the adjustment slots with hot melt glue and so it may be necessary to remove the glue to make the required adjustment. I didn’t need to, but it may be something worth considering if you can’t get the car to steer properly.
5) Loosen the torque sensor securing screws. It may be worth holding the torque sensor in its current position so that it doesn’t move accidentally.
6) Adjust torque sensor.
The torque sensor may now be rotated freely by hand. Only a slight adjustment is necessary to make a big difference to the steering.
Rotating the torque sensor clockwise steering right easier, but makes steering left harder
Rotating the torque sensor anti-clockwise makes steering left easier, but makes steering right more difficult.
With this in mind, make a SLIGHT adjustment in the required direction.
7) Tighten the securing screws and test drive the car.
8} Repeat steps 5 to 7 until the steering feels light in both directions at slow speeds.
This was my first tutorial, but I hope this helps some people here. I’m quite an ambitious person and was worried about messing this up, but having found how simple it is I would recommend anybody that is having this steering problem whos car is NOT under warranty to try this before spending (£900 + labour) for Vauxhall to fix it. The EPS / steering column can be picked up on Ebay for around £150, but why pay that when it can be done in half an hour for free?

This is the method I used to correct my own steering problem and I have placed this information here for the good of others. If your car is under warranty take it to a Vauxhall garage and get them to replace the steering column.
